Frequently asked questions
What does a 50:1 mix ratio mean?
It means 50 parts fuel to 1 part oil. For every litre (1,000 ml) of fuel you add 20 ml of two-stroke oil, so a 5-litre can needs 100 ml.
How do I mix two-stroke fuel correctly?
Use a clean, approved fuel can. Pour in about half of the fuel, add the full amount of oil, close the can and shake it, then add the remaining fuel and shake again. Mix small batches that you will use up quickly.
What happens if I use the wrong ratio?
Too little oil can leave the piston and bearings without enough lubrication, which risks scoring or seizure. Too much oil can cause smoke, fouled spark plugs and carbon deposits. Always follow the ratio your equipment manufacturer specifies.
Can I run a 100:1 mix?
Only if both the engine manufacturer and the oil allow it. Some oils, such as AMSOIL SABER Professional, are formulated for ratios up to 100:1, but keep to the manufacturer’s ratio, especially while the equipment is under warranty.
How long does mixed fuel keep?
Mixed fuel is best used within about a month. Store it in a sealed can away from heat and sunlight, and add a fuel stabiliser if it has to last longer, such as over winter.
Do I need to premix if my engine has oil injection?
No. Oil-injected two-stroke engines meter oil automatically from a separate tank, so you fill up with plain fuel and top up the oil tank instead. This calculator is only for premix engines.
