How often should you change your oil? Pick your vehicle or machine, tell us how you use it, and get an interval adjusted for short trips, cold starts, towing and other severe use.

What are you servicing?

Two-stroke engine? It runs on premix and has no oil changes – use the mix calculator.

This is an estimate based on typical service intervals. Your owner’s manual or service indicator always takes priority – especially while the vehicle is under warranty.

What counts as severe use?

Most manuals list two schedules: normal and severe. Many drivers in the Baltics fall into the severe one without realising it.

Short trips in the cold

Under 10 km, the oil never fully warms up. Fuel and condensation collect in it and break it down faster – the biggest factor in a Baltic winter.

Stop-start driving

Taxi, delivery and heavy city traffic mean long idling and many hot-cold cycles with little distance covered.

Dust and dirt

Gravel roads, fields and building sites load the oil with fine particles that wear the engine.

Towing and heavy loads

Trailers, caravans and full loads keep the engine hot and under strain, which ages the oil faster.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change my car’s oil?

Most modern cars specify 15,000–30,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. If you mostly drive short trips, tow or drive in stop-start traffic, the severe schedule applies – often around 7,500–10,000 km or every 6 months.

What is severe driving?

Mostly short trips, frequent idling or stop-start traffic, towing, dusty roads and very cold or hot conditions. Check your manual – many everyday drivers meet at least one of these.

Should I change oil by kilometres or by time?

Both: whichever limit you reach first. Oil ages even when the car stands still, so a low-mileage car still needs a change at least once a year.

Do short trips really wear out oil?

Yes. On short trips the engine doesn’t get warm enough to boil off the fuel and water that collect in the oil. Over a winter this thins the oil and forms sludge, so short-trip cars need more frequent changes.

Should I change oil before winter storage?

Yes – for motorcycles, boats and garden machinery, change the oil at the end of the season. Fresh oil protects the engine through the winter; used oil contains acids and moisture.

Can I go longer between changes with synthetic oil?

Fully synthetic oil resists breakdown better and gives you more margin, but don’t exceed the interval in your owner’s manual – especially during the warranty period.
